HELSINKI - The Meeting of Multiple Grids

Individual Work

A selective tracing of Helsinki’s contemporary urban form in city center reveals that the city has developed on the basis of the multiple gridded structures from J.A. Ehrenström’s Helsinki Town Plan in 1812, and its expansion started from the meeting points of the multiple grids. While original development of the city focused on plazas with monuments in the middle of grids, modern development started to focus on the in-between area of different grids, usually along the boulevard, filling the gaps and creating new centralities of urban life.
